Introduction: Social policy simply refers to all the strategies and schemes articulated and implemented by the authorities with the aim of bringing in improvements in one or all areas related to the individual and collective well-being of the members of society in general. ââ¬Å"Social policiesâ⬠according to Prof. Macbeth, ââ¬Å"are connected with the right ordering of the network of relations hips between men and women who live together in societies, or with the principles which should govern the activities of individuals or groups, so far they affect the lives and interests of other peopleâ⬠(1957:1). Vargas-Hernandez et al. define social policy to be the ââ¬Å"guidelines and interventions for the changing, maintenance or creation of living conditions that are conducive to human welfareâ⬠(2011:287). It includes the upbringing of the people in the areas like food, clothing, shelter, health, education, housing, employment and protection for all without discrimination. Using examples, examine the connections between gender, fear and urban Essay
Using examples, examine the connections between gender, fear and urban space - Essay Example While there are men who have small physical builds in comparison to other men, it is more likely to find a man with a build larger than a womanââ¬â¢s than to find the opposite scenario. Given this difference it is clear that, generally, women face a set of obstacles that most men will not have to ever experience. On the other hand, because of seeming biologically driven needs to defend oneââ¬â¢s space, men are often faced with challenges that, similarly, women will unlikely ever have to face. Thus, as distinct as each genderââ¬â¢s biological makeup creates them to be, so too are the vast differences between the obstacles they must face. These differing gender fear invoking issues will be examined within the context of urban space. The urban environment can pose many stress inducing variables for any individual despite gender. Crime, natural disasters, and other such factors create a spectrum of varying fear and anxiety inducing possibilities for both men and women on a daily basis. Needing to be extra careful with personal possessions in public arenas and making sure to be respectful of an individualââ¬â¢s space are added factors that become automatic parts of oneââ¬â¢s thought process while living in an urban environment. While both genders must face many similar urban space stressors, the differences begin to come to play when situations become more dependent on a personââ¬â¢s gender versus, for instance, specific environmental weather factors. For women, urban life poses specific problems due to biological factors. Because women are generally smaller and physically weaker than men, women must take this into account when they travel alone or even with other women to specific urban destinations. ââ¬Å"Fear leads women to take precautions which are often spatial, such as avoiding certain parts of the city or not going out after darkâ⬠(Koskela, 1999, pp. 111). In other words, the reality
Breast Reconstruction Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Breast Reconstruction - Research Paper Example The objective of the article is to bring out a comparison between the outcomes of immediate latissimus dorsi mycocutaneous flap, also known as Lat Flap, to tissue/expander implant, EI, reconstruction after mastectomy followed by Post Mastectomy Radiation Therapy (PMRT). It is also noted that PMRT, however, has an effect of increasing surgical complication risks and may cause adverse effects on the reconstructed breast. The sample size of the study is 29, women with invasive breast cancer who were treated between 2009 and 2011 in the same institution. There was a median follow-up of 11 and 13 months for Lat Flap and EI respectively, after completion of post mastectomy radiation therapy, which showed a trend of wound complications that required reoperation that included expander/implant los in the EI group (Durkan et al., 2012). Through the comparison, capsular contracture turned out to be the most sequel of PMRT in the group of Lat Flap with 67%. It was, however, treated with capsulot omy during the time of nipple-areola reconstruction. The comparison ultimately suggests immediate breast reconstruction with a latissimus dorsi mycocutaneous flap to be a workable option for women undergoing mastectomy, who are likely to require chest wall irradiation. ... and treated with mastectomy and immediate breast reconstruction that was followed by post mastectomy radiation therapy between February 23, 2009, and June 24, 2011. The team then did an analysis of the medical charts with respect to various variable including; unilateral or bilateral mastectomy, tumor size and characteristics, age of the patient, lymph node involvement, BRCA mutadon status, radiation therapy, chemotherapy use, type of reconstructive surgery performed, completion of reconstruction, total number of operations, length of follow-up, need for revision after final reconstruction, and complications including capsular contracture, wound infection, and implant loss (Durkan et al 2012). The methods of reconstruction employed at the institution were based on patientsââ¬â¢ preferences and surgeon discretion. There was no precise protocol referring patients to a particular reconstruction type. There was an x2 test of proportions which was employed for the evaluation of associa tions for non-continuous data, while continuous variables were reported as median values and an analysis made using Studentââ¬â¢s unpaired t test. A P value of < 0.05 was considered significant. In the view of the article, the question to be answered is brought out as a demonstration of wound complication rate differences between Lat Flap and EI reconstructions in the setting of post mastectomy radiation therapy. The study population is selected after a careful review, data is obtained, analyzed, interpreted and eventually a conclusion was drawn. Section 2 Statistical methods The team upon approval collected data from radiation oncology database with the aim of interpreting and doing an analysis that would lead to the arrival at a conclusion of comparing the outcomes of immediate latissimus dorsi

The Supreme Court Essay Example for Free
The Supreme Court Essay The Supreme Court made a ruling in Free Enterprise Fund vs. PCAOB saying that Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) will remain ââ¬Å"fully operative as lawâ⬠with the exception that The Securities and Exchange Commission will be able to remove at will members of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board. Previously they were not able to and was said to violate the appointment clause of the constitution. This changed job security for its five board members ending a three-year battle between a Nevada firm Beckstead and Watts who sued PCAOB in 2006. The accounting firm declared that it was unconstitutional for SEC to appoint its board members rather than the president giving it to much authority unchecks by executives. However, a decision been made by the courts to meet the plaintiffs at the halfway, pointed out that if was against constitutional policy to remove board members completely it would violate separation of powers principle. The courts rest the power with the president to have complete authority to hire and fire PCAOB members. According to Susan Hackett general counsel, this was an important move because it invalidated the PCAOB appointment process and upheld the SOX Legislation. A power move to allow congress and the president to have ultimate ability to control institutions that possess significant insight of companies. This decision in my opinion opens up a fair market and does not allow larger company to push and over power smaller firms. Board members must go through a screening process so not to have bias authorizes in control. Reference Jaeger, J. (June 28, 2010). High Court Ruling only Tweaks Sarbanes Oxley Act.
